Abstract (EN):
The quality of life in cities is, as expected, influenced by the properties of open space. This open space is often represented by the courtyard. The size of the courtyard, the character of greenery, the spatial arrangement, access to the space, the spatial forms of the surrounding buildings and a many other factors influence the ecological stability of the space, its hygiene properties, the way of its use by the people and, for example, the value of real estates. The characteristics of the open space influence the sustainability of the territory. The identification of a relationship between the characteristics of the open space and the sustainability indicators presents the research target. The research methodology defines sustainability indicators of the open spaces. The indicators monitor the sustainability within a range from 0 to 10 points. The relationship between the characteristics and sustainability indicators can be demonstrated by analyses of the case studies. Three forms of residential structures in the City of Brno were selected for analysis: the courtyards in the housing blocks from the 19th century, the open spaces in a panel-built housing estate from the 80' of 20th century, and a courtyard in new residential houses from the beginning of 21st century.
